When we think of creative writing, we think of stories or poems.

Creative writing is a large genre. It’s an art. It’s any type of writing that is original and self expressive. You are trying to express a feeling or thought, using words.

No matter what you write, it’s important to step out of your comfort zone and try new forms of writing. It’ll improve your skills and keep your writing fresh.

Here are a few different types of creative writing for you to try out.

Storytelling:

Storytelling is the most popular form of writing! Storytelling tends to lead itself in both nonfiction and fiction areas. Some forms of storytelling include flash fiction, short stories, novellas and long novels. Stories however, can reflect real life too.

Poetry:

From haiku to limerick, there are so many forms of poetry. It’another popular form of creative writing, but also one many people tend to dislike. It’s the most creative and artistic form of writing. There are so many different kinds of poetry. You can right prose, free-form or form poetry. It’s the best way to get your feelings onto the page and to get your creative juices flowing.

Essays:  

Essays? Just how creative can we be here?

Essays you write at school aren’t necessarily creative. It’s formal writing. It contains factual information and has a certain format.

You can write informal or persuasive essays. It can still include information and facts, but it should also include opinion, passion, or purpose. It can all organized as thoughtfully as possible to impress, persuade, teach, and so on.

Scripts:

If you want to shine on the stage or on a screen, then you can write screenplays (for film) or scripts (for plays). You can write scripts for video games too! There are so many cool ideas you can write and share with the world. There’s a chance people who don’t read will also see it.

Memoirs:

Memories are personal stories with narrower themes and are about specific topics. They are usually around the length of a novel, but can be shorter – the shorter works are usually considered essays.

Memories focus on specific, personal experiences instead a broad life story. For example, you can write a memoir about travelling somewhere.

It’s a good way to reflect and reminisce about all the great times in your life.

Lyric Writing:

Lyric writing can be considered to be similar to poetry. It’s a fun and creative way to merge the art of writing with the art of music. Writing lyrics is a great path for writers who can play an instrument or who want to work with musicians. It’s also a great way to get your worked to a bigger audience.

Speeches:

Whether it’s persuasive, informative or inspirational, speeches are a great way to practice your writing skills. It also improves your speaking skills. You can write a speech about anything however, there can be word or time limits on speeches. Write so you are clear and concise.

Free Writing:

This might be the most creative type of writing. Just turn on your computer or open up a notebook and start to write. Don’t let anything stop you. Write down whatever comes to mind and put onto your screen or page. Nothing is off-limits, stupid, or bad.

Set a time limit for yourself too. When you’ve finished, you may have some great ideas that you can be turn into larger stories later on.

These are just a few types of creative writing. There are so many other types out there. The goal is to step out your comfort zone, and to write!
